Bakersfield Heart Hospital is a member of Women Heart’s National Hospital Alliance.
WomenHeart’s National Hospital Alliance is a program comprised of hospitals throughout the country committed to advancing women’s heart health and to demonstrating their commitment in their community.
Upon becoming National Hospital Alliance members, hospitals send two women heart disease patients to WomenHeart’s annual Science & Leadership Symposium at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, where they are trained to be community educators, advocates and support network leaders. Upon returning home, the Science & Leadership Symposium graduates---also called WomenHeart Champions--- launch a support group for other women heart disease survivors based out of the member hospital.
Since 2002, WomenHeart has trained 628 WomenHeart Champions at its Science & Leadership Symposium. These WomenHeart Champions currently run 121 support networks for other women heart disease survivors in 37 states. They use a curriculum developed by the Minneapolis Heart Institute to run their support network meetings.
WomenHeart Champions have considerably increased public and Congressional awareness about heart disease in women. In addition, a recent survey of patients who participate in WomenHeart support network meetings indicated that:
- 93% feel their quality of life has been enhanced.
- 85.3% have improved their ability to communicate with their health care provider.
- 93% have increased their understanding of heart disease.
- 85.6% believe that attending meetings has helped them deal with challenges in maintaining their treatment/medication regimen.
- 86.2% believe attending meetings has helped them better communicate and explain their heart disease with family members, friends, co-workers, etc.
